PRIORITIES
The Fund for Portland Public Schools is actively engaged in cultivating an excellent academic and social/emotional experience for students. We’re focused on improving literacy, access to arts education and enrichment and crisis relief. As we hear from school communities about additional needs and aspirations, you’ll see our priority list evolve. We are actively rallying regional stakeholders, encouraging business, philanthropic and civic leaders and families to take collective action:
Let’s work together in the service of all PPS students!
Improving Literacy
Superintendent Armstrong is committed to leading with literacy! In alignment with the Science of Reading research, PPS uses a structured literacy approach to the development of reading and writing skills over the course of students’ learning experiences. The Fund for PPS is seeking partners and philanthropic dollars to enhance literacy for our students, especially those who are not meeting grade-level benchmark. Reading is a civil right and is essential for all other learning, including math. We believe all children can learn when they are given the right tools in a supportive learning environment.
Arts Education & Enrichment
We’re expanding access to professional productions, guest artist residencies in schools, sectional instructors for student musicians, specialized, high-quality equipment and materials for courses and performance groups and more. Why? We believe that the arts are essential to student expression and voice. Help us deepen students’ engagement with the K-12 Visual and Performing Arts pathways in their schools.
Crisis Relief
We’re repurposing our successful COVID-19 Relief Fund that has raised $1.3 million PPS students and families so that we remain nimble and responsive to emerging needs of our community. Why? We understand that students need the basic building blocks–shelter, food, warm clothing–so they can show up healthy and ready to learn. Help us support families who, even after trying to access community and government resources, still face extreme financial hardships that cause instability for their children.
